Bass Family
Fred D. Bass
Fred D. Bass, husband of Jewell M. Sheppard, was born in Stuttgart, AR on April 24, 1922. Fred was the only child of Reverend Remus Bass and Lemer Smith Bass. He attended Holman Elementry School in Stuttgart, AR, McKinley High School in Chicago, IL, Mississippi Industrial College in Holly Springs, MS, and A.M.&N. College (now the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff).
He entered the US Army on June 15, 1943 and served in the European and Asiatic Theatres and was honorably discharged as a sergeant on March 25, 1946.
In 1946, Fred married Maxine Williams of Holly Springs, Mississippi. From this union, one daughter, Glenn LaVerne Bass, was born. In 1952, Fred married Jewell M. Sheppard.
Fred began working at the United States Tobacco Company in 1954. During his tenure there, he held the positions of Assistant Plant Manager in both the Chicago and Franklin Park, IL facilities. Fred retired after thirty years of service and returned home to Stuttgart, AR, to care for his ailing mother.
He was the Treasurer of the UAPB/AM&N Alumni Association of Arkansas County.
He died on March 21, 2010 in Arkansas. He is the cousin of Rosie L. Adams Johnson.
